In celebration of National Engineering Month, we will highlight our organization’s talent to inspire the next generation of innovators and aspiring engineers. Colleagues will share their stories, pathways to success, and what ultimately led them to an impressive and impactful career.

Naomi began her impressive career trajectory in 2017 by enrolling at the University of Ottawa, where she pursued a double major in Biomedical Mechanical Engineering and Computing Technology. While taking part in numerous co-op placements, she gained invaluable and transferable skills. In last few months of her final placement, Naomi sought a challenge that would enable her to leverage these new found skills in an innovative field sharing that “defence and security was where I could make an impact.”

When Naomi joined General Dynamics in the fall of 2022, she hit the ground running. As a Systems Engineer, she focuses on navigating the server and application requirements that support the Land C4ISR Transition Software Support Contract (LTSSC) program and brings forth outcomes and solutions for the team to discuss with its stakeholders. Working as part of a large group, Naomi feels her role hones the many “interdisciplinary approaches engineering encompasses.”

Solving complex problems and working closely with system design and validation are what Naomi describes as the best parts of her role.

To her, engineering means many things: “This field plays such an important component in day-to-day society. Whether it’s identifying a specific problem or bridging a gap between technologies, engineering significantly supports key technical outcomes.”

When asked to share advice for aspiring like-minded individuals, Naomi emphasizes the importance of uplifting women and ensuring they have a voice at the table:

“It’s crucial to not shy away from challenges, especially as a woman in the defence industry. I remind myself that I deserve to be here and that I was hired for a specific role, just like my colleagues.”

Aside from solving complex problems, writing code, or breaking down a system’s requirements, Naomi enjoys winding down with friends, listening to music, and discovering new food spots in the city!
