Echoes Across the Globe highlights the global footprint and impact of General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada’s sonar systems technology. This series of customer profiles will spotlight our ongoing collaboration with allied navies and air forces around the world and focus in on how our industry-leading technologies are providing capability overmatch in anti-submarine warfare, strengthening maritime security, and advancing defence objectives for allied nations around the world.

Few navies operate across such distinct maritime domains as Colombia’s – a reality that places unique demands on maritime surveillance and underwater warfare. With coastlines on both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the

Armada Nacional (Colombian Navy) is responsible for monitoring strategic chokepoints, maintaining vigilance around sensitive maritime areas, and exercising control across wide exclusive economic zones. In warm, congested waters marked by heavy commercial traffic and complex littoral conditions, acoustic noise and overlapping jurisdictions increase the demand for systems that can detect, classify and track below-the-surface activity with confidence.

A defining feature of Colombia’s maritime security landscape is the presence of low‑profile and semi‑submersible vessels used in illicit trafficking. Operating close to or beneath the waterline, these vessels demand sustained underwater listening, driving the need for persistent, rather than intermittent, undersea surveillance capabilities.

It is within this operational setting that General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada (GDMS–C) is supporting the Armada Nacional’s next-generation of surface combatants. As part of the Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie (PES) program, GDMS-C has been selected by Dutch shipyard, Damen Naval, to supply Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) solutions for the Colombian Navy’s new frigates, built in partnership with Colombian state-owned shipbuilder, COTECMAR.

At the core of this capability is GDMS–C’s hull-mounted sonar technology, towed low-frequency active-passive sonar, and Underwater Data Management System (UDMS), delivering unmatched detection, tracking and real-time dissemination of subsurface activity across Colombia’s maritime domain.

The PES program represents a significant step forward for the Armada Nacional as it renews its fleet. Designed with ASW as a central mission, the new frigates will support Colombia’s ability to safeguard national waters, protect strategic ports, and maintain continuous presence on its Caribbean and Pacific coastlines, while enabling the planned retirement of the FS-1500 Almirante Padilla-class vessels and two older Pohang-class corvettes.

As a Major Non-NATO Ally, Colombia also plays an active role in regional and multinational maritime security efforts. Through longstanding participation in exercises such as UNITAS, PANAMAX and Southern Seas deployments, the Armada Nacional routinely operates alongside partner navies, showcasing interoperability and shared operational standards across the Western Hemisphere.

“Our focus is delivering unmatched sonar technology that supports real-world operations,” said Tony Morris, Vice-President, Air and Naval Systems, General Dynamics Mission Systems–International. “For navies like Colombia’s, operating throughout two oceans and varied mission sets, undersea awareness is foundational to maritime security. These capabilities provide naval forces with the confidence to act decisively beneath the surface.”

As the Armada Nacional looks to replace its legacy surface fleet with purpose-built ASW frigates, it will benefit from mission proven sonar technologies designed to deliver persistent detection, localization and tracking of subsurface threats. Developed and built in Canada, these capabilities draw on decades of operational experience supporting naval forces in complex maritime environments worldwide.

Through the PES program, General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada will continue to support the Armada Nacional with operational and maintenance training. This enduring partnership will ensure Colombia remains prepared to meet emerging underwater threats and maintain decisive undersea advantage spanning both the Caribbean and Pacific maritime domains.
