OTTAWA – General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada has launched HMS-610, a new hull‑mounted sonar designed specifically for bow‑mount integration on larger surface combatants.
HMS-610 is a hull‑mounted sonar system intended to support Anti‑Submarine Warfare (ASW) operations, including the detection, classification and tracking of underwater contacts. It is intended for use on larger ship classes where platform size, mass and acoustic requirements favour a bow‑mounted configuration rather than a keel‑mounted installation. The system is suitable for platforms including modern frigates and river‑class vessels.
Within the General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada hull mounted sonar portfolio, HMS-610 provides extended detection range. The system produces detailed underwater imagery to support operations in complex acoustic environments and is designed to integrate with the broader anti submarine warfare network, supporting interoperability with shipborne, airborne and unmanned platforms. The HMS-610 is powered by a comprehensive sonar operating system that enables advanced capabilities such as multi‑sensor data fusion, distributed sonar operations and embedded operational training.
In a collaborative move to increase European naval security and its contributions to strengthen NATO defence and deterrence, the Royal Netherlands Navy and Belgian Navy are replacing their multi-purpose frigates – the Karel Doorman class – with Anti-Submarine Warfare Frigates (ASWF) Through recently awarded contracts, General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada is providing sonobuoy processing systems and the HMS-610 technology for integration into these next-generation naval vessels.
“HMS-610 reflects our deep understanding of shipyard needs and operational realities,” said Tony Morris, Vice-President, Air & Naval Systems, General Dynamics Mission Systems–International. “By designing a sonar specifically for bow‑mount integration with concurrent active and passive processing, we continue to deliver world-leading capability that supports both shipbuilders and end customers.”
HMS-610 is available in a sensor‑stack configuration, allowing the integration of torpedo sonar intercept sensors and an underwater telephone (UWT), providing additional layers of situational awareness and functionality for platform operators. HMS-610 will form part of General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada’s presence at CANSEC 2026, at the company’s booth, No. 1601.
