“This opportunity is more than an achievement,” says Taylor, “it’s a significant milestone bringing me closer to my future in STEM.” As the General Dynamics 2024 Canadian Industrial Leadership Award recipient, she has been working as a software developer in the Application Service Infrastructure Subsystem (ASIS ) team, while balancing her studies at the University of Calgary.
Her interest in technology began in high school with a computer science class. “I discovered my love for its problem-solving nature,” she says. This passion led her to her role at General Dynamics Mission Systems–Canada, working on the Mercury Manager application. Her days involve team stand-up meetings and programming tasks aimed at enhancing functionality and user experience.
Her co-op placement marks her first professional experience, a milestone filled with challenges and triumphs. Navigating the terminology and acronyms of the defence industry has been a learning curve, but Taylor has adapted swiftly. “I had never considered working in defence,” she says, “but the internship has opened my eyes to the numerous roles and opportunities that exist in the industry.” Alongside her placement, she has access to mentorship, a bursary at the end of her term, and is gaining hands-on experience in the defence industry.
“This has been a great opportunity for me to learn about the company and how much it values equal opportunities for women in leadership roles.”
As General Dynamics’ first CILA recipient, Taylor is paving the way for the next generation of STEM leaders. As such, she was invited to attend CANSEC, Canada’s leading defence, security, and emerging technology event, where she met with the Right Honourable Bill Blair, Minister of Defence. “It was an honour to meet Minister Blair while I was at CANSEC,” she says. “He gave me a unique insight into his early career and emphasized the importance of good mentors to provide guidance.”
The program has given Taylor just that opportunity, with not one but two mentors at General Dynamics - Kathryn Arnal and Kassandra Rizopoulos, both on our engineering teams. “They have given me invaluable advice and ongoing support that gives me the courage to define my own role in this industry.”
Outside of work, Taylor teaches piano, having played since the age of six, she started tutoring others during high school. When she has time, she enjoys drawing, playing video games, and hanging out with her friends.
Looking ahead, Taylor hopes to be as much of an expert as her colleagues. "I want to become as proficient as they are and make a significant impact," she says.
