Job Description

We are currently hiring for a working level Software Engineer with Linux systems administration experience to support delivery of critical capabilities for the Canadian Army.  You will be working with a multidisciplinary engineering team to deliver Intelligence, Reconnaissance, Target Acquisition and Surveillance (ISTAR) capabilities into a fully integrated tactical network, capable of providing flexible, multi-role and combat-capable communications, command and control. You will be part of an agile development team that is responsible for designing, implementing and verifying software components for ISTAR commanders and operators.  As a team member, you will work closely with the lead engineer to deploy system architecture to facilitate implementation, testing, and maintenance.

As part of the Agile team, you will:

  • Design, develop, implement, troubleshoot, and maintain various IT systems, ensuring optimal performance, availability, and security.
  • Manage IT system infrastructure and processes related to these systems, including monitoring and problem resolution.
  • Identify, troubleshoot, and resolve system problems, communicating status to management and internal customers.
  • Identify, analyze, document, and resolve issues and defects throughout the product life cycle, supporting verification and validation test events.
  • Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code according to standards and best practices.
  • Implement software components that integrate sensors into ISTAR solutions, develop and perform software tests, and debug software.
  • Participate in software code reviews, ensuring high-quality code and adherence to coding standards.
  • Provide leadership and mentorship to more junior team members, contributing to their growth and development.
  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and technologies, applying technical expertise to drive innovation and improvement in software development processes.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.

This role requires on-site work at our Ottawa office and customer locations within the National Capital Region, with flexibility to work remotely when necessary. Occasional travel may be required to support customer field trials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science or related discipline.
  • 5+ years of related experience developing system software.
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as C# or Java.
  • Strong problem-solving, debugging, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Experience with software configuration management tools and the Agile software process.
  • Ability to work effectively independently and within a team environment.
  • Effective time management skills to meet schedule and budget targets.
  • Proficient in Linux OS, especially in distributions such as RedHat, CentOS, or Ubuntu.
  • Experience managing user accounts, groups, permissions, and authentication using standard Linux tools.
  • Well-versed in configuring and troubleshooting network services including DNS, DHCP, and firewalls.
  • Versatile in working with virtualization platforms such as VMware, and container technologies like Docker.
  • Proven experience with container technology, including Kubernetes, Docker, and other orchestration tools.
  • Skilled in administering large software deployments on Linux/Unix systems, clustered storage solutions (e.g., Ceph), and configuration management software (e.g., Puppet, Ansible).
  • Must be a Canadian citizen with 15 years of consecutive residence in Canada. Must be able to obtain and maintain Canadian Security Clearance and a positive Controlled Goods Assessment.
